I just installed MS Office 2010 Home and Student from a sealed retail package (Family Pack) on a Dell D630 Running Windows 7 Professional, 64 Bit. The D630 had no other Office software at the time of installation. When prompted, I entered the product key from the inside of the packaging and waited for validation. Seeing no problems, I continued with the installation, which completed. When I started MS Word, the activation window came up and I chose to activate online.

After a minute, I got an error message saying 'the Product Key is Invalid'. There is a link for more information, but clicking it brings up a 'cannot find server' error. I uninstalled MS Office 2010 from Control Panel and then reinstalled it from the original product DVD. I went through the same procedure as before and got the same results. Microsoft Office 2010 will not activate due to an invalid product key. The product key says Office 2010, the package was previously unopened, yet it does not appear valid and I have no idea why, nor what to do about it.

Is there someone within Microsoft that I can chat with to find out why my product key is invalid? Does anyone know how to re-enter the product key? I have had this problem activating Windows 7, but there is a place to re-enter the product key during the activation process. All help will be appreciated. The error you describe often happens when a user install their own copy of Office on a computer that has a factory installed 'free trial'.
How do you KNOW there is no other copy of Office installed? Is this a new computer? Is this an 'old' computer with a fresh install of Windows from Windows disk or installation file? Is this an old computer that has been 'reset' using the recovery partition? Options 1 and 3 could have a factory installed copy of Office even if you aren't aware it is there. Please go to Control Panel Programs and Features and scroll through the list of installed programs looking for other copies of Office. When things are bad, you can either: - cuss, - cry or - laugh.
Why not choose to laugh. This is an old computer with a fresh installation of Windows.
The hard drive had been in a different PC and had Office 2010 installed at one time. A new SSD was installed in the other notebook and the contents of the hard drive were transferred to the new SSD. All of the data was erased on the original hard drive and the and a fresh install of windows 7 was performed. Even though I did it, I don't recall whether I reformatted the drive before I installed windows.
I think that IO did, because there was a recovery partition on the drive and I wanted to remove it. There is something that I could try, but haven't. I have several of these D639s that I have rehabilitated and could try installing Office 2010 one another one.
Since this is a 3 user license, I should be able to install and activate 3 copies. I've got at least 2 more notebooks that don't have Office installed.
At the least, I could see if I get the same activation error. Since you re-installed Windows from disk there is no worry about a 'hidden' Office installation. So that shoots down my idea. Since you are getting an apparently (somewhat) valid 'invalid product key' error the first thing you need to do is make sure that you are typing the product key correctly.
Validate Now: You can confirm that your software is genuine now (I don't know if this link is still working). It’s quick and easy: Click the ‘Validate Windows’ button.
If the validation check fails, then you are going to have to buy your product again. You should contact the vendor for a refund. Depending on where they are in the scam cycle they may give you the refund or they will string you along with delays. You should also contact your credit card company to cancel the transaction or to at the very least give them a heads up on the scam so that they can deny the scammer any further sales. You may also want to report the vendor to.
If it is a legitimate purchase, then you are possibly having a known problem with Win7. There are 3 possible causes, 4 possible fixes: First confirm that you are not making a simple typing error. Second, it may be an access rights problem. There are 2 possible fixes for it. Either activate using “Run As Admin” or “Take Ownership” of the problem drive folders and registry entries.
I can provide links to several articles for these types of fixes.2a, try doing Windows update (it worked for one person) (but apparently you have already done that.). Third do a phone activation. When you phone in, don't reply to the initial prompts.
Wait until they offer the option of talking to a live service rep. They can check the key and (hopefully) give you a better idea of the cause of the error. Here are some other things you can try to get around this problem.
2010 Invalid Product Key - “This is not a valid Office product key. Verify that you have the correct key and retype it.” has 2 “wizards”.(one for 2010, other for 2007 and 2003) that step through possibilities, many links (note: as of 2016, most of the links on this page are no longer working) Resources to help you activate a license in Microsoft Office 2002-2007 programs Office 2010 Product Key “solution” More details please. Did you install a trial then use a purchased product key to activate it. Did you uninstall the factory trial. Did you install from CD. Did you download from internet and install in 1 step.
Did you download from internet, saving to HD. Then run the downloaded file to do the installation There are a few possible causes. I tried most of the links and only one returned a valid page. I followed the questions and answers, but at the end it just said that I should contact Microsoft Customer Support, which I will do as soon as I have time. I looked at the installed programs from Control Panel and could only find one instance of MS Office. For grins, I installed MS Office 2010 on a Dell E6400 Running Windows 10 Pro, 64 Bit.
Before I did, I went to Apps And Features and uninstalled everything that had 'Office' in it. That included 'Get Office' and Word, Excel and PowerPoint Viewers.
For good measure, I restarted the E6400 after uninstalling the programs. I had no problems with the installation and the product key was validated after I entered it.
Once the installation was complete, I fired up Word and clicked the Activate over the internet option. After a minute or so, I got the same 'Product Key is Invalid' message. I have no reason to think that the software that I have is not genuine. If it is fake, it is an awfully good fake. I believe that something else is going on, but I have no idea what. I called customer support and was quickly connected to a representative.
I was not able to understand her English and eventually I was transferred to a different representative. I was able to understand him and gave him my product key from the box.
I should have studied the phonetic alphabet before trying to give him the number since it is quite difficult to understand the spoken letters of the product key. I think that I understand the gist of his explanation, but I had some difficulty understanding him and my call was eventually dropped by my cell phone carrier. To make a long story short, it appears that this copy of MS Office 2010 was sold or given to a software developer and was not supposed to be resold. While my copy appears to be genuine, it also appears to have been sold fraudulently. There is nothing on the package or on the original shrink wrap that would indicate this and the product key appears to be the only way to identify it. It took twenty minutes on the phone to reach this point. I wish that there had been an easy way to verify the product key online.
There may be, but I haven't found it. This is something else for buyers to be aware of. Just because the product appears genuine and unopened, it may not be an actual retail product and the software may not be able to be activated. I have uninstalled it and will look for a different copy.
